In the final concert for 2022, Nightscapes showcases the romance of Rachmaninoff and contemporary soundscapes inspired by photography of 1950s. Hoang Pham returns to perform Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, brimming with virtuosity and melodies that live long in our memories. HSO’s affinity with composer Michael Daugherty continues with the Australian premiere of his 2018 work Night Owl, inspired by nocturnal photography and sound recordings of Ogle Winston Link. Daugherty takes listeners through Link’s stunning photographic journey of the last days of the steam locomotive powered train across late 1950s America.
